The Obligation of Khuruj: A Divine Call for Justice

Proofs for the Obligation of Khuruj

Key Reminder: After a request from a dear brother, we have decided to summarise the key arguments from the Qur’an and Sunnah in regards to the obligation of enjoining good, forbidding evil, rendering the judgement to God. This Divine obligation can only be enacted if there is tamkeen (possibility).

So, what this means is that when a Muslim ruler commits tyranny, oppression, and injustice, then his right to rule is taken away from him because ruling and governing is only for God.

Thus, the Muslim ruler is obligated to enact the laws of God on earth and the Believers will hold into account. We will not commentate, instead we believe that presenting some of the evidences in summary form will be sufficient to make the point clear

These clear cut, explicit verses will guide the seekers of truth God-willing

BISMILLAH

“And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and [for] the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, ‘Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper?’” (4:75)

“And fight them until there is no more fitna and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah.” (2:193)

And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed – then it is those who are the wrongdoers” – other verses say ingrates (kafiroon), transgressors (fasiqoon) – (5:45-47)

And remember that Abraham was tried by his Lord with certain commands, which he fulfilled: He said: “I will make thee an Imam to the Nations.” He pleaded: “And also (Imams) from my offspring!” He answered: “But My Promise is not within the reach of evil-doers.” (2:124)

“And if two groups of the believers fight each other, make peace between them. But if one of them transgresses against the other, then fight against the one that transgresses until it returns to the command of Allah” (49:9)

“Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice” (4:58)

“Let there arise from you a group inviting to all that is good, commanding (obligation) what is right and forbidding what is wrong. And it is they who will be successful.” (3:104)

“O you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice as witnesses to Allah, even if it be against yourselves, your parents, or your kin.” (4:135)

When some of ˹the righteous among˺ them questioned ˹their fellow Sabbath-keepers˺, “Why do you ˹bother to˺ warn those ˹Sabbath-breakers˺ who will either be destroyed or severely punished by Allah?” They replied, “Just to be free from your Lord’s blame, and so perhaps they may abstain.” (7:164)

“And fight them until there is no more fitnah, and [until] the religion is entirely for Allah. But if they cease, then indeed, Allah is Seeing of what they do.” (8:39)

Go on fighting with them till there is no more a state of tribulation and Allah’s way is established instead. Then if they desist from it, there should be no more hostility except against those who had been guilty of cruelty and brutality (2:193)

He is the One Who has sent His Messenger with ˹true˺ guidance and the religion of truth, making it prevail over all others, even to the dismay of the polytheists. (61:9)

“The HUKM (legislation governance, judgement) is for none but Allah. He has commanded that you worship none but Him. That is the straight religion, but most of mankind do not know.” (12:40)

“He shares not His rule (ḥukm) with anyone.” (18:26)

SUNNAH:

When Ubada b Samit asked whether the swords should be raised against the Imams, the Prophet responded “No until you see a clear kufr (disbelief), for which you have proof from Allah.” Sahih al-Bukhari 7055, 7056

“Whoever does not rule with what Allah has revealed, it is they who are the kafiroon” (5:75-77)

“Obey the Quraysh as long as they show mercy when asked for, and are just when asked for. But if they do not, then put your swords on your backs and annihilate them. If you do not, you will live in misery like farmers.”
